American Moon rocket and holds the record for highest payload capacity of any
functional rocket ever built. The Soviet N1 was designed to compete with it.
Its payload to Low Earth Orbit was the unempty S-IVB (third) stage, the LM or Landing Module, and the Apollo CSM. The third stage would then restart to perform translunar
injection.
The Saturn V, throughout its launches, has never failed and no crew have died from it. (On
Apollo 13, the fault was with the Service Module and not the Saturn V.)
