bananahead

A battle droid, from "Star Wars".
I love it when I hear a bananahead in "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" saying "Roger, Roger!"

One of the most amazing string instruments ever created: a type of harp/lute from West Africa (mainly found in Senegal, Mali, Gambia, and Guinea) with many strings. The instrument consists of a long fingerboard with moveable frets, and two courses of strings running across a large gourd across which an animal skin is stretched. The instrument is held toward the chest with the strings facing toward you, and the gourd has two pegs, one on the each on the left and right of the top. The sound is delicate and tinkly, much like a harp.
Toumane Diabate and Alhaji Bai Konte are two of the top names to seek when you'e looking for a CD of kora music.

txalaparta

A really cool percussion instrument from the Basque people. It consists of two long thick planks of wood, and is played usually by two people standing opposite each other across the planks of the instrument. Each player holds two thick sticks or dowels, and the first player initiates the rhythmic pattern. The sticks are held loosely in each hand and are "bounced" on the planks, each stick rebounding from the board like a yo-yo. A well-played txalaparta produces a rich, woody tone. Pronounced "chah-lah-PAHR-tah".
At the festival, there were some Basque musicians, and two of them were playing a txalaparta.

clamhead

A type of hairstyle favored by Star Trek fans who identify with the Klingons and their culture.
I'm sure we'll see at least one clamhead at the con. It'll be a nice change from all of those cheesy Ferengi-oids marching around!

To act in an impetuous way and not play by the rules, like Captain Kirk from "Star Trek".
The NotGoth did a Kirk: he brought his gat and a bottle of Thunderbird into the rave club, when the sign outside the club said "No Alcoholic Beverages and No Firearms Allowed"!

copzilla

A police officer who is unusually heavy-set, big-boned or tall, not necessarily brutal.
A big, mean-looking copzilla pulled me over for going 65 in a 45 mph zone, but he wasn't snappy at all---as a matter of fact, he was very polite.

A court reporter, from the noise the court reporter's machine makes when the minutes of a trial are recorded.
The clacker was stuck in traffic, so we have to wait until she gets into the courtroom.
