Verb. In orienteering, the final approach to a control in perhaps difficult terrain, usually beginning from a location you are reasonably sure of... the "attack point".

"I attacked the pit from the bend in the path but I overshot and had to try again from the gully"

spike

Verb. In orienteering, to execute a route choice perfectly; to run directly to a control without wasting any time or effort.

"I spiked everything except number 2 where I lost 30 seconds"
