punk

1. A "punk" was originally a tramp's young homosexual companion. In other words, a rent boy with no ethics.

It then mutated in meaning, via an insult connoting the same, to become a term for a ruffian (mid 20th century). It was in this sense it was used in Punk Rock from 1976 onwards.

2. TRUE: Someone who does what he or she wants because they like doing it, and not giving a fuck about what other people think.

3. FALSE: Someone who can't think for themselves, so imitates people from category 2 above, in an attempt to look kewl.
1. Punk was the English term for the French Apache - see George Orwell's Down & Out in Paris and London for details.

2. The most truly Punk thing that Johnny Rotten did was to quit the Sex Pistols and form PIL.

3. Busted were fake punks, who have now thankfully split up.

Kabbalah

1. A form of Jewish Mysticism, dating back at least to the 12th Century or even earlier. Kabbalists themselves say it dates back to just after Adam was expelled from the garden of Eden. From mediaeval times, the Kabbalah has been "borrowed" by Christian alchemists and ritual magicians.

Note that real magicians do not charge money for spiritual enlightenment.

2. A cult invented in the 1960s by a fake Rabbi called Michael Berg. He basically just read all the books on the subject and created a million-pound enterprise aimed at getting money out of gullible celebrities like Madonna, etc.
1. Isaac Luria (famous mediaeval Kabbalist): The way to enlightenment is to meditate upon the secret teachings which the Lord has hidden within the scriptures.

2. Michael Berg: The way to enlightenment is to pay me $200 for some old tat that was already available free or next to nothing anyway.

Apache

A French-term meaning rent-boy, or an insult for an unpleasant young man, having much the same meaning as Punk. The term was common at least until the first part of the 20th Century (see George Orwell's "Down and Out In Paris and London").
I will never listen to "Apache" by the Shadows in the same way again, after reading Dr Pinch's definition.

Linux

Contrary to what is claimed by many Windows-haters, not all versions of Linux are particularly good. The price you pay a stable OS is the amount of fuss and bother you undergo in trying to find a decent version of it!
I installed the free version of Linux that came with the book "Linux for Dummies". It didn't work. I am still trying to work out if there is any irony in the preceding two sentences.
