Pronounced hoo-gah. A Danish word that describes a situation in which
people feel content and relaxed. Hygge usually suggest an informal, pleasant sit-down with friends, a relaxing stroll, etc. The term isn'
t normally used to describe intense activities or ones that rely on materialistic things.
The fact that hygge does not have a proper translation to almost any language, is often taken to suggest that it's a
deep and unique part of Danish culture, that foreigners find
hard to grasp.
Danish person:
Hey, you'
re invited to hygge at my place tomorrow!
Tourist: What's on the agenda? getting
drunk? board games? a movie? a meal?
Danish person: Umm.. no.
