This simply means "laughing quietly to self"
Usually used in instant messanger.
Because most of the time when people say LOL, they are usually not laughing out loud, but really to theirselves.

Girl 1:Why didn't the skelliton cross the road?

Girl 2:I don't know why?

Girl 1: Because he had no body to go with!!!
