Oligopoly

An Oligopoly is the act of participating in a monopoly with multiple companies. Behind closed doors the companies will usually agree not to compete with each other in certain regions of a country, state, or city. This can lead to the severe spike in prices without the need for compensation due to competition. This act, while royally fucking a consumer, can provide access to a previously illegal business practice with zero negative repercussions and an immunity to any legal action being taken against the companies in question.
Comcast : So Time Warner, You take New York, I'll take California, and AT&T can take Texas.

Verizon : This is looking to be the most corrupt Oligopoly to date!

oligopoly

An Oligopoly is the parallel of a monopoly. Where a monopoly is a market dominated by one seller with little or no competition, oligopolys have many sellers competing for customers.
If left unchecked intime slowly grocery store will fade from an oligopoly to a monopoly thanks to Wal-Mart.

Theory of Scientific Oligopolies

A situation where a small, entrenched group of elite institutions, journals, or research paradigms collectively control a field. They may compete amongst themselves, but they present a united front against outsiders, maintaining a closed system that determines whose work is credible and what questions are valuable.
Theory of Scientific Oligopolies Example: The "top five" journals in many social sciences. Publishing in them is essential for career success. This creates a scientific oligopoly where a small set of editorial boards, sharing similar methodological preferences, gatekeep the entire discipline, marginalizing innovative or heterodox research that doesn't fit their mold.

Oligopoly

Defined as a small group of companies that acts like a cartel to fix prices and stifle competition. Usually applies to gas stations and supermarkets, but can be applied to any industry with a small number of players.
When an independent gas station tried to start a price war with its major competitors, the oligopoly colluded to squeeze the smaller player out of business.

Stealthie

when you're holding up your phone and making faces at it, as though you are taking a selfie, but you're really taking a picture of the person across from you or the wall or anything else that seems interesting but you don't want to be caught dead taking a picture of.

This action is often made more convincing by wiggling the eyebrows or opening the mouth, to pretend you're trying to get a Snapchat filter to work.
FRIEND A: "Did you just take a stealthie of me?"

FRIEND B (turning phone around): "no I was just using snapchat's new filter, see?"
