A. DESCRIPTION: THE M4A1 IS A COMPACT LIGHTWEIGHT WEAPON THAT IS A MODIFIED M4 CARBINE. THE M4A1 (SOF VARIANT) CARBINE DIFFERS FROM THE BASIC M4 IN THE FOLLOWING FEATURES; FULL AUTOMATIC FIRING MODE, A FLAT TOP RAIL FOR MOUNTING DAY/NIGHT SIGHTS AND A DETACHABLE CARRYING HANDLE.

B. CAPABILITIES: THE M4A1 FIRES THE SAME AMMUNITION AS THE M16A2 AND THE M4 CARBINE. IT ALSO MOUNTS ALL ACCESSORIES COMMON TO THE M16A2 AND M4 TO INCLUDE THE 40MM GRENADE LAUNCHER. SOF UNITS WILL HAVE THE ABILITY TO ADAPT ONE VERSATILE WEAPON TO MEET SEVERAL MISSION NEEDS RATHER THAN HAVING MANY DIFFERENT WEAPONS THAT ARE CURRENTLY EMPLOYED.

M203-Features: The M203 40mm Grenade Launcher is used while attached to an M16A2 5.56mm rifle. It is a lightweight, compact, breech loading, pump action, single shot launcher. The launcher consists of a hand guard and sight assembly with an adjustable metallic folding, short-range blade sight assembly, and an aluminum receiver assembly which houses the barrel latch, barrel stop and firing mechanism. The launcher is capable of firing a variety of low velocity 40mm ammunition.
The launcher also has a quadrant sight which may be attached to the M16A2 carrying handle and is used when precision is required out to the maximum effective range of the weapon.

A shortened variant of the M16A2 rifle, the M4 provides the individual soldier operating in close quarters the capability to engage targets at extended range with accurate, lethal fire. The M4 Carbine achieves over 80% commonality with the M16A2 Rifle.
The m-4a1 m203 assualt rifle is similar in design and functioning to the M16 family of rifles. Compared to the M16A2 rifle, the M4 Carbine is 1.3 pounds lighter, 6 5/8 inches shorter with buttstock extended, and almost 10 inches shorter with the buttstock collapsed.
