Slang term for marijuana cigarettes (joints) dating back to at least the 1940s.

"Uncle Jim was in the Navy during World War II and he said they smoked joints onboard all the time. They called them 'goofbutts'."

One of innumerable terms given to marijuana in the '70's by older stoners. I met a 'Frieda' in Maine once who used this.
