A style of music, originating in Trinidad and Tobago, that is a blend of Soul and Calypso. Originally combined the melodic lilting sound of Calypso with insistent percussion (which is often electronic in recent music) and local Chutney music. The reputed father of Soca was Lord Shorty (born Garfield Blackman), in Trinidad and Tobago, whose 1973 recording of "Indrani" started the trend.

Soca is a type of dance music which originated in Trinidad-and is a mixture of calypso and Indian music and rhythms. However, someone stated that Soca mainly comes from Trinidad & Barbados-WRONG. Barbados didn't start producing soca until the 80's....it's just that they have some popular artists so they get credit but they got into the game late. I also want to state that Soca is most definitly NOT limited to Trinidad (though they produce the most soca and sometimes the best).

There are great soca artists coming out of ALL the Caribbean Islands like St. Vincent, Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua, Dominica, etc. All these Islands produce GREAT soca music but they are not given a lot of exposure so many of you probably think Soca is limited to only T&T and Barbados-which is not true at all.

St. Vincent especially has done very well for itself-with artists like Kevin Lyttle, Jamesy P, Beckett.
Grenada has the incomproble Ajamu, Sparrow (considered a T&T artist as well), Inspector, and some great new talent like Mr. Killa.
Barbados has Rupee & Alison Hinds among other artists.
T&T has too many to name-but Machel Montano,Destra and Shurwayne Winchester are some of my favorites from Trinidad.
Antigua has some very talented artist like Burning Flames, whom I am a big fan of as well.
"Teaser" by Beckett is a great soca tune
"Turn me on" By Kevin Lyttle is a great soca tune
"It's Carnival" By Destra & Machel Montano is a great soca tune
"Iron Bazodee" By Alison Hinds is a great soca tune
"Balance" by Mr. Killa is a great soca tune

Soca is a dance music which is a mix of Trinidad's calypso and Indian music and rhythms, especially chutney music—it is not, as is often said, a fusion of soul and calypso. It combines the melodic lilting sound of calypso with an insistent percussion.
Some soca songs which have become hits:

"Hot Hot Hot" - Buster Pointdexter (originally recorded by Arrow)
"Follow the leader" - Soca Boys (originally recorded by Nigel and Marvin Lewis)
"Who Let the Dogs Out" - Baha Men (originally recorded by Anslem Douglas)
"Sweet Soca Music" - Sugar Daddy
"Turn Me On" - Kevin Lyttle
"Tempted to Touch" - Rupee (Soca artist)
"We Not Givin' Up" - Machel Montano and Xtatik
