misfire clap

When you try to start a round of applause with the "spark" by clapping but no one else joins in and it quickly dies leaving you feeling really embarrassed and everyone staring at you awkwardly.

David: I was at an awards banquet and I saw a girl go up then I tried to start an applause reflexively. No one followed me and everyone started just staring at me.

I had my phone in my left hand so I slapped my lap with my right hand to applaud when Bill received his award. Lap claps come in handy.
