It also reffers back to the saying "he/she/they ATE that blah blah blah"

A pet, most often a dog, but possibly a cat, bird, ferret etc, who follows you into the kitchen or when you’re eating hoping that you will drop scraps of food that they can eat.

Every time I make breakfast my crumb shark of a dog stands between me and the stove hoping I drop some food.
