Goth

A word that no-one in Urban dictionary can define because they don't know the concept of definition in the first place, which is a concise explanation of the meaning of a word or phrase or symbol.

John: A goth is not someone who dresses all black, acts depressed all the time and wears make up.

indie goth

a kid stuck between the world of INDIE and GOTH , not a poser child like you all will assume, but someone who loves the deepest darkest most "hardcore" music of both worlds.

for those who can't grasp the point: you dress like you're indie, but you dress it all up with a hella lotta black. (And don't forget the music....)

mall goth

If all these kids are *fake* goth, what's *real* goth? Are they fake because they're young? Because they like bands that more than 3% of the population have heard of? Because they like to wear black?
Is it bad to experiment with styles and music, especially when you're a teenager? Who defines *true* and *fake* anyway?

Kid with Manson tshirt: I like Manson's music.

Adult with Manson tshirt: You're a poser, man. You don't know the true meaning of Manson. I am a true fan because I am over 17. You're a mall goth.

I have read most of the definitions on this page. Most are not true. In fact, over half on here are defiantly not happy with their lives, if they need to mock or threaten other cultures… same with religion, I must say. If Christians have such a strong belief in god and are happy with it, why do they need to poke at Satanists or pagans. Be proud of what you believe in, there are now laws protecting Satanists and occults.

There is hardly anything left of the 'Goth' scene today, all of the Goths either dress like eras from the past or either what they think the future will look like.

Being ‘Goth’ is not about self inflicted harm. Some of you may have serous problems and feel suicidal and may self harm. Do not boast about cutting for attention, and then complain about the more popular people round you needing attention all the time. Some of you may be unhappy, some incredibly happy with their lives. Cyber ‘Goths’ are always clubbing and dancing, they are labeled Goth and yet they are not dressing to show off that they cut themselves. If you had serous pain in some time of your live, and want to show people that you are ok now, proudly show your scars, it proves that you lived through drug abuse/child abuse or anything that made you commit that.

To all the teenagers out there who are dressing in black and claiming to be members of an occult, and always complain about not being around other people and have no friends. Why do you dress like that? It’s just intimidating and none of the other students your age will want to know you.

As for the others, be yourself. If being Goth means you have to force yourself to listen to music that sounds naturally bad, then why do you do it? If it is because all your friends or 'posse' are Goth, if they are truly your friends, they will understand if you want to become not Goth.

Isn’t this true?
If you complain, then you must defiantly be those I just explained. Listen to other peoples opinions, but question them if it needs questioning.

And just one last thing. This was written by a 13 year old. Just to let you know, i am not a hypocrite. I am proud of every word I say. If you saw me, you would not even know.

A goth is an artistic person with a huge aesthetic who expresses this in a dark way. Real gothic music is The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Sisters Of Mercy etc. Goths are ususally associated with Satanism, which is completely untrue because you will find goths tend to have no religious beliefs or no strong religious beliefs, though a very very very small minority are Satanists. Goth is also usually a term used as an attempted insult by chavs and the like, mainly because chavs have nothing better to do besides insult people different to them and terrorise communities.

Insta-goth

Insta-goth is when someone who wears things like jeans and shirts from stores like wal-mart, and other stores of the mainstream likes, and goes into a store like hot topic and come out a completely different person, and completely different in dress. This is also known as Mall goth, but just because you wear things like tripp doesn't always make you a Mall goth, Hot topic isn't a poser store, it just happens that alot of posers tend to shop there.

BOB: dude, that guy just went in there and came out completely different.

Frank:leave him alone, he is probably an Insta-Goth.

Ok, here's my definition...
Someone who is not affraid to be different, listens to rock style music (usually metal, gothic rock, goth punk, alternative etc) and does not wish to be popular. They have creative talents and are usualy completely missunderstood.

Having trawled through the other definitions on this site, i have found things which i dissagree with. Just because someone labels themself goth, does not mean that they are a fake, or a posser. If someone wears black nail polish eyeliner etc, this also does not make them posser goth. It just means that that is how they wish to look and this is what goth means to them.

Also, music is something which we can debate. a goth can listen to any band they like, you cannot say that because someone who calls themself a goth, listens to manson, then they are not a "real" goth, thats stupid. manson is a goth. the whole band are goths. so, therefore, a goth band. other bands like HIM, have been debated. HIM are a goth band, no matter what you say. Ville Valo is a goth. He writes gothic lyrics. All of the songs are of a gothic style. again, a goth band, which ever way you look at them. Deathstars are a personal favorite of mine, they are also goth. ofcourse, having said that a goth can listen to any music, i do need to contradict myself. a goth that listens to r and b would be just damn riddiculous.

OK, examples. A goth is someone who may or may not be partial to wearing black clothing but most often they do. listen to music of a rock genre (music does seem to have the biggest effects on who or what you are labeled as). they are not usually popular as this is not a neccesity to them. They are their own person, nobody elses.

Small minded person: You're not a goth, you listen to HIM

Goth: HIM are a goth band

Small minded person: No they're not

Goth: Why not???

Small minded person: Erm... cos thats what my friends say?

Goth: you're friends are stupid
