It's probably because they've reached a point in their existence where they can't find life's meaning even in a religious setting. You felt attacked because you though I was accusing you but you didn't know anything at the time but by the time you found out about it. You just didn't get it. At any point. You didn't understand what was happening. You didn't want to play ball because I was being offensive and derogatory.
