Stemming from a text-file written in 1978 on BBS's, declared rules and what to expect for "newbs"(pronounced newbies, short for "new BBS users").
This transfered later for new internet users.

Generally accepted internet rule that states that pornography or sexually related material exists for any conceivable subject.

Additionally it is accepted that the rule itself has limitations and you cannot be too specific on the content of the item in question.

Most commonly used on various message boards for various reasons, from humor to cruelty.

In other words, Proof that your childhood is not sacred.

Rule 34 is a rule which consist of the meaning if it exist there is a porn for it, but it has limitations

If you were to say "I want to see rule 34 anime" you would get it.
But if you said "I want rule 34 (insert name) f*cking a tree"
You probably wouldn't get it
