The big cheese is most commonly used as someone with a superior status, think of a boss or someone you work for.

Some words like “big cheese” would be; head honcho, the man, or more rarely, alpha (male).
-when using this term, it can also be used as someone who has a false ego.
Ex.) Jeez, richard sure is acting like the big cheese tonight

-less commonly, “big cheese” can also be used as someone who is popular.

“Uh oh, here comes the big cheese, dont act stupid!”
