So, the employer uses some arbitrary phrase, that doesn't have to do with getting underpaid, in a last-ditch attempt/effort to get the employee to reconsider their decision. If some employee decides to apply and move on, the manager will make defamatory statements about the employee skills as a last resort to ensure they won't get the position.

Employer: "Hmm, IDK about the XYZ position... if you moved on to that position, you'll get fat!"
