A racial slur used to insult South Americans. The origin of the word derives from the fact that in poor South American countries, some people can be found living in garbage dumps living off the garbage or "dirt".

A dirt dog is a player who may not be the glamorous big name star of a team but they know how to play ball and they get it done. Also know as a "ballplayer"...as in "Did you see Mike Lowell turn that play, he is a f*cking BALLPLAYER"
