Drinking the kool-aid

A idiomatic phrase that refers to an unsubstantiated but strongly argued opinion that is rejected outright as being held by a person or persons that is under the effect of a hallucinogenic drug. Kool-Aid spiked with LSD is the root from where this late 1960’s early 1970’s phrase originated.

If you think that the president will be impeached because of his inappropriate activities with women, then you’ve been drinking the kool-aid.

Drank the Kool Aid

Long before any cult suicides, the phrase originally referred to the common practice of someone spiking the punch bowl with liquid LSD at large parties since the 1960’s. The practice was chronicled by Tom Wolfe in his 1968 best selling book, “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.”

“Rumor has it that Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters just dosed the punch, so you’ll have to cancel work tomorrow since you just drank the Kool Aid.”

To blindly follow, or believe something or someone without even questioning the facts. Refusing to agknowledge the real truth. Believed to have connections to the Reverand Jimmy Jones cult that committed mass suicide by drinking kool-aide spiked with poison.

If they beleive that, they must be drinking the kool-aide.
