A type of music akin to poetry, except usually more explicit and put to some sick beats.

Rap began simply, with The Sugarhill Gang and their hit single 'Rapper's Delight' and evolved into The Pokemon Rap and further into Eminem and 'Lose Yourself'. However, after that, rap started to get intense with black gangsta rappers talking about drugs, money, drugs, sex and being phat. Fellow homies started getting shot up in the streets by fellow rappers to show that they meant business and rapping became a dangerous game. Eminem's still alive, sure, but for how long? Rapping's not just a musical style anymore - it's a way of life. We got 99 problems, and rapping's all of them. Rapping has degenerated into a war. It needs to stop!

But anyway, I hope all you white kids out there start getting into the rap game. It ain't just for the black folk, y'know! Just be careful, okay?
"I said a hip hop, the hippie, the hippie to the hip hip hop and you don't stop the rock it to the bang bang boogie say up jump the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat."

"He's got vomit on his sweater already; mom's spaghetti."

"Electrode, Diglett, Nidoran, Mankey. Venusaur, Rattata, Fearow, Pidgey."

"Man, whatever happened to real rap? You know, the good stuff like The Pokemon Rap."

Rap was once a good genre of music, our lord and savior Tupac, Biggie Smalls (Notorious Big), Ice Cube, Wu-Tang Clan, are all rappers. Nowadays people just go "Gucci Gang, Gucci Gang, Gucci Gang, Gucci Gang, Gucci Gang, Gucci Gang.) It is mainly used to listen to, to get hype; or "lit". It has driven downwards towards 2017.
Ice Cube & Tupac are one of the greatest rappers of all time and used to produce good music.

Rap, meaning ‘rhythm and poetry’, is a genre of music that involves reciting words rapidly and rhythmically over an instrumental backing. Rap originates from African American culture, some of its most notable artists being Tupac Shakur, Rakim, Dr Dre, Biggie Smalls, etc.

‘Rhythm’ refers to the flow and beat of the instrumental backing, as well as how deftly the words are recited.

‘Poetry’ refers to the lyrics, usually involving social and/or political issues in addition to personal life stories and experiences.

An issue that many old school rap fans take up with rappers nowadays is that they don’t produce nor write their own music, which was a big part of the rap genre. Some claim that this takes away from the background of the genre, and how the lyrics in rap songs were used as an outlet for black people facing oppression in America.

Old school fans tend to value the lyrics and the emotional value of rap songs, whereas newer fans tend to value the beat and how successful the song can be.

(Note: Not all new rappers are distasteful. For example, Kendrick Lamar, Tink, J.Cole, and others do implement lyrics about issues black people face today into their music.)
Old School Fan: All these kids put a ‘Lil’ in front of their name and call the lyrics they bought off of some B grade producer ‘rap’.

New Fan: The lyrics don’t matter as much as the beat. If they’re talking so fast you can’t hear the lyrics, then they don’t matter. To make it a successful song that sells you need a catchy beat, not deep lyrics.
