A emo is a teenager, usually like 14 to 16 years old who is really emotional, listens to really crazy metal/rock music, likes dark, strange and & emotional and expressive things & dresses in black and has a hard time smiling.
There usually lonely and depressed (but not always) and keep a journal and write angsty poems that they plan on making into songs and they might be in a band.
They probably have weird niche taste, like the video game Undertale (& Deltarune to) and listen to My Chemical Romance a lot aggressively.
A accurate depiction of emos is Octavia in the webseries Helluva Boss. (Who is loved by many irl emos for being relatable)

Kid 1: "Hey who's that quite guy with the headphones on all the time blasting the Black Parade?"
Kid 2: "Oh that's just Kurt, he's emo."
Finally a definition of emo by a guy who actually WAS one!

Emo was a genre of music that developed out of the failing straight edge movement, especially in the DC area when bands such as Minor Threat and Bad Brains began to lose popularity.
These bands decided to take the energy of punk rock but without the anger, creating emo. Bands include: rites of spring, indian summer, some fugazi, ect. During emos height (84-87), it was generally very emotional, fast, and powerful music. Eventually, it became influenced by pop (much like punk) and is what it is today. It has also become a term to describe someone who is depressed and overly emotional, generally for attention.

I was wondering how Rites of Spring and My Chemical Romance are both labeled Emo and are completely different.

mo was originally a nickname for "emotive hardcore" (type of music), but has evolved into meaning "emotional" because it was misinterpreted, since fans of this music were ususally known for being a bunch of depressed-self-harming-teens with too much free time. It's all stereotypical. But this is what it's known for now. An emo person (like I said stereotypical) would be very depressed, hate the world, including themselves and probably cry all the time. They've even stereotyped and emo style. Usually "emo" kids dress in skinny jeans, dark colors (but not all black), band tee shirts, and chucks. But, like I said about 5 or so times. IT'S ALL STEREOTYPICAL!!! And it did originally mean "emotive hardcore". (and if some one dresses like that it doesn't mean they're gonna go suicidal!)
