The logarithmic difference between the audio, video, or any signal and the unwanted random signal beneath it.

The signal to noise ratio of most DVD Video discs exceeds 50db. VHS, on the other hand pulls in at a lowly 38 db.

the ratio of signal to noise in decibels (dB).

A postitive signal to noise ratio means the signal is louder than the noise. A negative signal to noise ratio means the noise is louder than the signal. Typically, the signal is speech, music, or whatever sound is being listened for.
