A type of animation originating from Japan. Can be characterised by oversized eyes, spikey, outlandishly coloured hair, and so on. Even without these things, the style of Anime is easily distinguishable from the inferior western cartoons. All inferior, apart from Futurama, which rocks. But the rest of the stuff we make is crap compared to Anime.
Anime is usually bursting with Japanese culture, including Japanese backdrops, Japanese food, Japanese attitudes, etc. We are most familiar with anime for children like Pokemon. But the really good stuff has adult content like violence and nudity. This type of anime isn't really comparable to any western cartoons.
Anime seems to have many consistent elements between shows - such as cats. People with cat ears seem to be very common in Anime aswell, for some reason. Also, even if you find the type of Anime which focuses on relationships between characters, chances are it still involves magic powers, people becoming robots and things of that nature.

it is often heavily edited and 'dumbed down' when dubbed by america, as it is assumed americans will not understand.
the subbed versions are pretty much a straight translation, so it is better if you want the original storyline.

It is very popular in the states, and it has a wide range of age groups that it targets, from young children to young adults. Anime and manga have various styles, some better than others. The fanbase is very large, and at times, very annoying, but it really is an interesting phenomena.
Japanese animation and comics are very interesting. However, that is not to say that some American animation and most American comics aren't.

some cool animes are Witch Hunter Robin, .Hack//SIGN, Cowboy Bebop, zoids, Gundam, and the list goes on.

Get the anime mug.Put quite simply. It's Japanese animation, An animated series/movie with the "Made in Japan" lable. But, it isn't that simple. Anime usually has a far deeper storyline than western cartoons, wich usually rely on gags and humor. That doesn't mean that if something is anime, it is good(I personally would never like to see or hear the word pokemon again). Also, because Japanese television isn't as censored as American TV,(come to think of it, I don't think any kind of television is as censored as USA's, I'll check on that)so many "concerned parents" believe that anime is nothing but violent porno, which is not true.
