In layman’s terms “fumbled” or a similar term is “dropped the bag”

Definition: Failed to do something or action, missed a shot you took or missed opportunity

In conversation example:
A: Magner did you ever score those tickets to the Sox game that guy you knew?

B: I buttered it, waited too long to ask him and he gave them away.

Or
A: Did you make a move with that girl/guy you’re dating?

B: I buttered it, I had good opportunity but I didn't follow through

In Action:

Attempts Free Throw with basketball or Beer Pong ball and air balls

Response to failed action is: “I buttered it, Dude” or “You buttered it Dude”
