Characterized by angsty teenagers, mainly from middle class suburban families, dressing in tight pants (often girl jeans), studded belts, black band t-shirts, and heavy use of eye liner with dark straightened hair with crispy bangs meant to cover one eye.
Music tastes tend to be a form of rock characterized by whiny depressed lyrics about some deep seeded emotional issue.
The Emo trend gave rise to toxic social media where dealing with insecurity meant creating an embellished internet personality to appeal to the masses rather than actually learning to love and accept yourself for who you really are.
The Emo era ended sometime in the late 2000s when Myspace began giving way to Facebook. The fashion and music tastes died out but the general attitude of "depression is cool" remained to this day.
