A clique of students in high school. They are thought of as more important than everybody else. When you’re popular, the mostly rest of the high school population knows who YOU are and many things about you, no matter if you know THEM. It’s pretty much like being a mini-celebrity. Many of the non-chosens despise and/or worship the popular people, but in reality they just got to be popular by being overall a nice person. Popular girls are always pretty, with a caring for their clothes and makeup, as well as their social presence. Popular guys are usually complete fboi, and either need to be attractive or athletic (or both). Many of them are rich, since that would support their expensive clothes and lifestyle. You’re pretty much born into the group or you’re not.
Person 1: “Have you seen Tyler? He’s so cute, popular, and funny!”
Person 2: “I know, right? He’s on like 5 different sports teams. Where do you think those muscles came from?”
Person 1: “Yeah, but I heard that he’s dating Olivia, so....”
Person 2: “Oh rite. Can’t do much there. Olivia’s popular, blonde, and somehow thicc and skinny at the same time. What a baddie!
Bystander: “eh boi wtf look at these wannabes”

Although the laughing emoji normality has changed through the years due to the constant use of TikTok and other platforms, we can look at some of the normal ones that have been used the most.
Some of those include the following:
2010-2020 Laughing Emoji 😂 (Also notably the word of the year in 2015 by Oxford)
2020-2021~2023 Skull Emoji 💀 (Still commonly used, but not as popular and seen as cringe by today's standards)
2021-2021 Chair Emoji 🪑 (Started as an inside joke but never caught on)
2023-2024 Sobbing Emoji (Loudly Crying Emoji) 😭 (Still used in tandem with today's laughing emojis)
2024-Present Wilting Flower Emoji + Empty Battery Emoji 🥀🪫 (Used to signify more depression than humor)
With this list, we can also observe the slight decline through the years that Gen Z has been putting in affect as the "new normal". Ever since the crying emoji in 2023, Gen Z had started basing more of their humor off of darker jokes. This can also be observed with the wilting flower and empty battery emojis as they signify weakness or sadness. One popular way it's used is as acceptance. Memes that include horrible scenarios with no way of the reader/speaker getting out is another popular scenario. Although I'm not trying to make my generation's dumb memes sound sophisticated in any way shape or form, it is interesting to see how the laughing emoji norm has changed over the years and the new humor that develops alongside it.

Get the not popularmug. I'd rather be unpopular/hated by all for who I am (even if it meant they didn't respect me) than popular/well liked/loved by all for something I'm not (an image of a well liked/popular person) or something I think they would like/love rather than who I really am, because then I would be living my life like a poseur and a coward.
