To make the most of the situation you are placed in, or to work with what you've got. Playing a situation as it lays may include some improvisation.

Origins in golf, where a ball is played 'as it lies', or where it came to rest, as opposed to circumstances which would allow the ball to be played from another position on the course.

When life throws you a curveball, sometimes it's best to play it as it lays.
