When someone (who doesn't identify with the male gender) has an interest in a mainly male-dominated hobby or interest, and is questioned with complete bullshit trivia to try and "prove" that they are actually fans, by a man. They are "grilled" with questions, hence the name. Similar to mansplaining.
John: hey what sports do you like?
Beth: oh, I like hockey.
John: Really? Well, what is the name of the the coach's hamster? What is hockey player's mother's blood type? How many seconds into the game was the first penalty in yesterday's game?
Beth: Dude, you are totally bbqing me. Why can't you just believe me when I say i'm a fan? I shouldn't have to know tons of pointless trivia to support and cheer for a team.
