This is not a rule, anything can be a meme, but it must be made public on the internet and it has to be unique, never seen before. Modern, new memes last no more than 2 weeks. This was not a case many years ago. Also, explaining a meme RUINS IT, so if you're friend is new to this, give him links, and say as little as possible to not ruin it.
