N-Dimensional Philosophy

The branch of thought that asks whether our 3D perspective is fundamentally limited, and whether a higher-dimensional being would see us as flatlanders, trapped in our spatial slice, unable to perceive the full truth of existence. It questions whether God might be a 4D being, whether our souls might be N-dimensional, and whether death is just a rotation into an axis we can't perceive. N-dimensional philosophy makes you feel both very small and very hopeful, as your problems might be solvable if you could just access the 5th dimension, where the car keys are probably just sitting there, visible to anyone with the right geometry.

N-Dimensional Philosophy *Example: "After a long week, he sat in his 3D chair, in his 3D apartment, and thought N-dimensional philosophy. 'Maybe my stress,' he mused, 'is just the 3D shadow of a 4D calmness. If I could just perceive the extra axis, I'd see that everything is fine.' He then realized that even if this were true, he was still stuck in 3D, and the stress returned, possibly from a dimension he couldn't access."*

Consciousness Philosophy

The branch of thought that grapples with the "hard problem" of why there is subjective experience at all. Why isn't the universe just unconscious matter following physical laws? Why is there "something it's like" to be a bat, a human, or possibly a very advanced AI? Consciousness philosophy asks whether a perfect simulation of a mind would actually feel like anything, whether colors exist in the world or just in your head, and whether you can be certain that anyone else is conscious or if they're all just very convincing philosophical zombies. It's the field that makes you suspicious of everyone, including yourself.

Example: "Lying in bed, he entered a state of consciousness philosophy. 'I am aware that I am aware,' he thought. 'But am I aware that I am aware that I am aware? And if so, does that awareness have a color? And if it does, is that color the same for everyone, or am I alone in a universe of private qualia?' He then became aware that he needed to pee and the philosophy ended."

Metaformal Philosophy

The branch of thought that questions whether anything actually has inherent form, or whether form is just a convenient illusion our minds impose on a shapeless universe. It asks: Is a circle a real thing, or just an idea? If a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to perceive its tree-shaped-ness, is it still tree-shaped? And if you dream of a square, is that square less real than a square drawn on paper? Metaformal philosophy is the art of realizing that the boxes we put things in are themselves just things in bigger boxes, and the biggest box of all is the universe, which may or may not have a shape we can comprehend.

Example: "Staring at a coffee mug, he entered a state of metaformal philosophy. 'Is this mug inherently mug-shaped,' he wondered, 'or is its 'mugness' just a temporary arrangement of atoms that my brain has been trained to label as a container for hot beverages? And if I call it a hat and put it on my head, does it become hat-shaped?' He then spilled coffee on himself and realized that, philosophically, the mug was still a mug, but practically, it was now a mess."

Metaepistemological Philosophy

The ultimate branch of thought that questions whether knowledge is even possible, and if it is, whether we can know that we have it, and if we can know that, whether that knowing counts as more knowledge or just more recursion. It's the field that has spent millennia asking: What is truth? Can we ever be certain of anything? And if we can't be certain, why do we keep trying? Metaepistemological philosophy doesn't provide answers; it just provides increasingly sophisticated ways of saying "I dunno." It's the philosophy that leads either to a state of profound wisdom or to a complete mental shutdown, often both at the same time.

Metaepistemological Philosophy Example: "After a lifetime of study, the old philosopher reached a state of pure metaepistemological wisdom. A student asked him, 'Master, what is knowledge?' He smiled and said, 'I know that I do not know, and I am no longer certain that I know that.' The student asked if that was wise. The philosopher replied, 'I don't know, and at this point, I've stopped caring.' He then took a nap, which was the only thing he was certain he needed."

Digital Philosophy

The branch of thought that grapples with the existential questions raised by living in a world of ones and zeros. Is a person the sum of their digital footprint? If you delete a tweet, did it ever really exist? If an AI writes a poem, is it art or just advanced autocomplete? And in a world of filters and avatars, what does it even mean to be "authentic"? Digital philosophy doesn't have answers, but it does give you a sophisticated way to feel uneasy about how much time you spend looking at a screen while a screen looks back at you.

Example: "Staring at his own face on a Zoom call, he entered a state of digital philosophy. 'If this is me,' he wondered, 'but slightly smoothed and with a virtual bookshelf behind me, am I more or less real than the me in the other room? And if I mute myself, do I make a sound?' His cat walked across the keyboard and unmuted him just as he was thinking this, and his colleagues heard everything."

Metadigital Philosophy

The branch of thought that questions whether the digital world has any original content at all, or whether it's just an infinite hall of mirrors reflecting itself. It asks: If everything online is a remix, a reaction, or a repost, what is the original? Is there an "authentic" digital experience, or are we all just curating and commenting on content that was itself curated and commented on? And if you take a screenshot of a tweet about a screenshot, have you created something new, or just made the recursive loop one level deeper? Metadigital philosophy is the art of realizing that the internet is just one big, endless, mildly entertaining ouroboros eating its own tail.

Metadigital Philosophy Example: "He scrolled through his feed for three hours, seeing memes about memes, tweets about tweets, and TikToks reacting to TikToks. He then had a metadigital philosophical crisis: was he consuming content, or was the content consuming him? He posted this thought online, and someone immediately made a meme about it. The loop continued."

Supernatural Philosophy

The branch of thought that asks whether the supernatural exists, and if so, what that means for our understanding of reality, morality, and whether we should be nice to strangers in case they're angels in disguise. It grapples with questions like: If miracles are possible, why are they so rare and always ambiguous? If God intervenes in human affairs, why is the intervention always a "subtle nudge" rather than, say, solving world hunger? And if ghosts exist, why do they spend all their time in drafty hallways rather than, say, the VIP section of nice restaurants? Supernatural philosophy is the art of asking questions that have no answers, but at least the questions sound profound.

Example: "After a long night of supernatural philosophy, he concluded that if ghosts existed, they were probably just as confused as the living and spent their afterlife doing the same things they did in life—wandering around, losing things, and complaining about the temperature. This was either profound insight or projection, and he couldn't tell which."
