To compete at a level below what you are capable of in order to lessen the possibility of losing.

To back away from a challenge because it might be difficult.
Even though I'm a 6 1/2 foot tall senior basketball player, I like to pull a woodburn and play against tiny freshmen players. It makes me feel better about myself to dominate someone half my size.
