They develop amnesia so they can continue to cope with the copy and paste mechanics, repetitive side missions, and terrible storylines that have been re-hashed to them over and over again. A good story means nothing to them, all they want is mind-numbing special effects and action sequences. They do not consume because they want to, they consume because they need to.
