Pulling a Magic

Originated as a person who many people knew to be a loveable character. Pulling a Magic means you are giving someone lots of love. This love is often shown by helping someone, falling whilst love and making it obvious, and very occasionally being a silly, innocent, human.

Friend: Hey, how's it going?
Friend 2: It's not going too well.
Friend: Talk to me about it. I love you and want to help out a friend.

The art and science of fixing things through brute force, random prodding, or just dumb luck. Also applies to freeing stuck objects, moving heavy things, or anything else that requires more physical prowess than mental.

Me: *fixes rattling bathroom fan via unscrewing the cover, poking a few things with a finger, then screwing the cover back on*

Model Magic

The practice of manipulating a financial model to maintain a 2.0x return despite discovering negative information during diligence. This is often achieved by increasing exit multiples, reducing Capex, manipulating working capital assumptions, increasing revenue growth rates and increasing gross margin assumptions among other tactics. This is also sometimes referred to as goal seek modeling where every factor other than purchase price is adjusted to arrive at the desired outcome.

Associate 1: I have some bad news, the Target's recent results are well below the banker model and suggest that the declining revenue and margins are continuing vs turning around.
Associate 2: No problem, I'll just apply a little Model Magic and the return will still be 2.0x
