A troublesome or bothersome circumstance, situation, person, or thing. A bother. Can refer to something or someone beastly or terrible. Can express worry, weariness, or pain upon injury. Often used as an exclamation signifying frustration or upset upon entering a certain predicament.

Derived from the character/beast called a balrog in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, by J.R.R. Tolkien.
