munchausen by proxy

Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a mental illness and a form of child abuse. The caretaker of a child, most often a mother, either makes up fake symptoms or causes real symptoms to make it look like the child is sick.

The DSM-IV places Factitious Disorder by proxy (i.e., Munchausen's syndrome by proxy) into this category, defining it as “the intentional production or feigning of physical or psychological signs or symptoms in another person who is under the individual's care for the purpose of indirectly assuming the sick role."

Their sole caretaker was diagnosed with Munchausen by Proxy after it was discovered they were poisoning the child to make them seem more ill in order to gain sympathy.

Proxy Slur

Proxy Slur: A term or phrase that is commonly used in a seemingly innocent or neutral manner, but has been assigned a covert, derogatory meaning by specific groups or in certain contexts. The offensive connotation is not apparent to those outside the specific group or context.

"Neighbor": In your example, the word "Neighbor" is a regular term used to describe someone living nearby. However, if two or more parties have agreed to use it as a stand-in for a racial slur, it becomes a proxy slur in their specific interactions.

"Apple": Imagine a scenario where a group uses the word "Apple" to derogatively refer to a person from a certain city or region, unbeknownst to others. In this context, "Apple" functions as a proxy slur.

"Blue Sky": In a hypothetical case, if "Blue Sky" is used among a particular group to negatively refer to a certain ideology or belief system in a covert way, it would be a proxy slur in that context.

When a PdM tech in the plant purposely misdiagnoses machine failures in the plant to garner attention and advancement within the company thus justifying their position as well as overtime. The downside is capital being wasted as well as extra unneeded work for the other maintenance employees who could be assigned to more value added work orders.

Denver diagnosed that the #1 I.D. Fan had a inner race defect. Management decided to shut the plant down and change the whole fan out. After losing six hours of planned production downtime the new fan had more vibration than the original. Another Chunkhausen Syndrome by Proxy moment!
