A nickname used for New York City. New York City is according to most sources – The Greatest City in the World and/or the Capital of the World. The only other city that may have claim over the nickname "The City" is London and possibly Tokyo. That being said, it is widely accepted that New York City is indeed "The City" to which every other city compares itself. Los Angeles is not "The City", Paris is not "The City", Rome is not "The City", Chicago is definitely NOT "The City" and San Francisco is definitely NOT "The City".

Get the The City mug.I guess if you live in or around a city, to you that is THE city. And where I live, the Bay Area, San Francisco is THE city. Not Oakland, not San Jose, not Foster City (even though it has "city" in its name), but San Francisco. And no one I know here calls it "Frisco"
