The term "cat's pajamas" comes from E.B. Katz, an English tailor of the late 1700's and early 1800's, who made the finest silk pajamas for royalty and other wealth patrons. This phrase is often likened to and/or confused with the 20's term "cat's meow".
Katz's pajamas are the cat's pajamas.

1920s slang... someone or something wonderful or remarkable.
The other definition says it's from the '50s... In the 50s, there was a strong nostalgic fad of everything 1920s, which is why this term may have been thought of as from the '50s.

Spike: I don't believe it! After a huge setback, Applejack is back at the front of the pack!
Pinkie Pie: She's the head of the pack, all right. The pick of the litter! The CAT'S PAJAMA'S! Oh, wait! Why would Applejack take some poor kitty's PJ's? That's not very sporting of her.

Kinda like when you have an asshole who is bullying someone and instead of leaving them hanging, you answer the bully by saying “no man, you got it all wrong-they are the cat’s pajamas”
