A great and powerful family in Nigeria and Edo Benin, famously known from the first Obaseki Chief Agho Obaseki (died September 9, 1920) who was a paramount Chief in the Benin Empire from 1898 to 1914, and then Iyase (Second in command, Chief of all Chiefs.) of Benin from 1914 until his death in 1920.
When the British came to Africa and usurped the original Oba of Benin; Chief Obaseki tuled for 19 years until the child the of original Oba came of age at 21 and challeneged his birth right to the throne. Chief Obaseki then became Iyase.
The Obaseki family and legacy continues to this day a very large and promising future; such as Godwin Obaseki the current governor of Edo State, Nigeria since 12 November 2016. He is the pioneering and current Chairman of the Edo State Economic and Strategy Team which was inaugurated by Governor Adams Oshiomole in March 2009.
And famouse actress Matilda Obaseki a Nigerian film actress and scriptwriter. She is the lead actress in the award-winning TV series, Tinsel.
