We were not in danger of a direct hurricane hit, but we expected rain, winds, and possible flooding. Even with a couple of days off work, the dread made it impossible to fully enjoy the hurrication.

When your neighborhood is struck by a hurricane and you can't go to work or school, similar to a staycation.
Thanks to Hurricane Harvey I get 2 extra days off because the office is closed. Let the Hurrication begin!

A hurrication is when you leave because of the approaching hurricane but turn it into a vacation at the same time.
Joe, are you leaving because of the category 5 hurricane in the Gulf? Yeah, Maria and I are going to make a hurrication out of it since we haven't gone anywhere this year.

When a hurricane is coming and those ordered to evacuate take advantage of the situation and make a vacation out of it. Those who choose to remain home and put shutters on their house gather around with family and friends and ride it out. Usually the rich/middle class people take a flight and travel and the poor ones with shitty homes flee to another state. It can be usually seen as a good and bad thing because schools and workplaces are shut down but homes are at risk.
Bob only gets 1 week of paid vacation a year. Because of hurricane Irma, he took his family, fled to New York and enjoyed his one month hurrication before coming home only to find his roof was missing.
