To be completely dumbfounded or shocked. That I know of, its origins are Irish.
I have know idea what a "gob" is or why it is common practice to smack somebody with one when they are shocked.
It seems like a rude thing to do, though.

A stupid word that was made up whilst playing a game of "Catchphrase". The contestant was adamant it was a word, the quiz-master didn't think so and said no. The contestant then went into a massive sulk over it and still believes it is a word to this day.
