Psychological manipulation where one who attacks another uses the response to gain sympathy for their actions.

Alex: "I noticed you told everyone about the disagreement we had, but you left out the part where you were shouting."

Jamie: "Well, I was under a lot of stress. It's not fair how everyone is piling on me now."

Alex: "That's gazalighting, Jamie. You're omitting your role in the escalation and then making yourself out to be the one who's being targeted, all to gain sympathy."

Gazalighting is a term used to describe a specific manipulative behavior where an individual attacks or provokes another person, and then, when the other person defends themselves or retaliates, the instigator tries to shift the blame or portray themselves as the victim. It involves a deliberate attempt to distort the reality of the situation, making the second person question their actions or feel at fault for the initial person's aggressive or provocative behavior. This term captures the essence of creating confusion and doubt in interpersonal conflicts to manipulate the narrative in one's favor.

During the debate, John criticized Mark harshly, but when Mark responded with his own criticism, John accused him of being aggressive and hostile, effectively gazalighting him into thinking he was the instigator of the conflict.
