It involves a deliberate attempt to distort the reality of the situation, making the second person question their actions or feel at fault for the initial person's aggressive or provocative behavior. This term captures the essence of creating confusion and doubt in interpersonal conflicts to manipulate the narrative in one's favor.

During the debate, John criticized Mark harshly, but when Mark responded with his own criticism, John accused him of being aggressive and hostile, effectively gazalighting him into thinking he was the instigator of the conflict.
