Simply to call someone on a phone.
From when the cost of a pay phone was 10 cents, or a dime. You dropped a dime in the phone to make a call.

-Why are you so late?
I was in traffic.
-Pshh, why didn't you drop a dime and let me know!

Means: You lost your girl (Often means did something stupid to lose her) so now she's my girl, now she's fair game. That is another way to say "drop a dime"

Derived from 'drop a dime' i.e. 'snitch' combined with 'I would do that for a nickel'

A: "Don't tell him, he'll turn you in"
B: "But wouldn't he get in trouble too?"
A: "He would drop a dime for a nickel"
