When a person accidentally puts their foot in their mouth or otherwise insults someone, or makes everyone aware of an elephant in the room. Then he or she tries overly hard to make the situation better, or cover up their tracks. Like heavy machinery moving backwards, it's definitely noticable.....

String em up and shiv their ankles

To "string" somebody up and "shiv their ankles" was used as a threat during the 1540-60s in many parts of Eastern Arabia. When somebody thought their slaves were being abducted during the night, they would threaten the suspect with a "good ol ankle shiving." However, very few instances have been recorded where the person actually went through with the stringing and shiving. It was much easier to just shoot them. Now-a-days this phrase is used on the computer voice-chat program "Discord." When a person wishes for another person to be "banned" or "kicked" from a Discord "server," that person declares that the moderator(s) or owner(s) should "string em up and shiv their ankles," essentially, "Ban this scrublord from the discord because he is stupid."
