A sub-genre of non-mainstream music recently brought into the mainstream with such bands as The Killers and Franz Ferdinand. Its fans tend to be the pickiest of any kind of music, rejecting any change in the sound or lyrical content of their favorite bands that makes them sound even slightly "mainstream." This form of music has thus gained a reputation of snobbery.

I would tell you about my favorite band, whose music I love, but you've never heard of it and thus you are not worth the telling.

Indie

Nothing that can be defined. It's a stereotype for those without one. Indie (independt) people are themselves and nothing else. Someone who's indie can shop wherever they want not just your local thrift store or no name record store. They can go to Hottopic or Ambercrombie and still be indie. They don't have a dress code. They don't have a style. They're just them.

A true Indie Will listen to SHFUX (yes that's a real band) and Good Charlotte, because they're truly independt and don't care what others think.

Indie

A style of music geared towards pretentious university/college idiots who think they are hip and original by listening to boring, snoozeville music. Many of the individuals who listen to this music feel they are superior in intellect to others. If you dog their music, they will just tell you that you don't get it and that your mind is too small to understand. Most indie scensters are snobbish and think that they are some type of musical elite. The reality is, college kids get sucked into this music because they feel they are finding a new identity that makes them different than the other "brainwashed, money humping, corporate idiots" because they really can't define themselves as a person.

Indie dude1: "Hey man. I saw Matt Pond PA the iother day. It was awesome."

Indie dude 2: "Yeah man. Matt's lyrics are so genius; they're almost counter-cultural."

A normal, sane person: "Indie music is boring and retarded. You all are just college snobs looking for an identity because you have none and no personality!"

Both indie dudes: "He just doesn't understand man! His mind needs to be freed."

Not a very noble pursuit at all; living every breathing moment to go against the "mainstream." The major flaw in this logic is that in trying so hard to go against the mainstream, indie kids act according to what everyone else is doing. Your not very hip when everything you do results in stooping to the level of the so-called mainstream that you feel so superior to.

The popular new buzzword describing slightly off-beat music and movies that cost less than 4 million dollars (but generally more than 1) to make regardless of whether or not the album or film in question is independent of anything. See also Alternative.

And idiot would consider the films Garden State, Adaptation, or Sideways to be "indie." That idiot might also stupidly assume The Killers, Radiohead, or The Pixies to be "indie."
