Loke

(Adj.)

Shortening of "loco".
Can be used as an endearment, similar to "fool." Tightly associated with surf, skate, and snow, "loke" evokes boldness and confidence, but not specifically aggression. A lokester is essentially the foil to a gangster; he is a self-reliant chiller rather than a loyal menace.

Not to be confused with: Loc or Loc', which is short for Local and is widely used in resort town with high densities of tourists, transplants, students, drifters, or other non-loc's.

Origin: Southern California, ultimately from Spanish. Probably emerged from bilingual communities in the Los Angeles basin sometime around 1990. By 2010, the ethnic connotations were basically lost and the word was used by white teenagers in Northern California and elsewhere.
