What people think it is: self harm, depression and everything is black
What it actually is: spinning around to your favorite song from My Chemical Romance, Green Day, or Taking Back Sunday till you fall over exhausted and ponder what you're doing with your life. You wear mostly dark colours, (not necessarily black), listen to emo, screamo, or punk bands. You don't have to cut either. If an emo does, that's for a completely different reason (unless they are a fake wannabe emo). They are like everyone else but they like their music to have meaning and they pay attention the darker sides of things, not just the ideal sides.

Get the Emomug. Emo is basically a more complex version of punk. It targets the feeling of the audience and originated in 1980. People like to take the mick out of emos coz apparently we are self harming idiots that like attention, this is not true because you don't have to hate yourself to be an emo. that is a load of rubbish....

A term used when describing someone who listens to the genre of music and/or genres such as rock and metal, wears mostly black and other dark colors, has hair that can easily be mistaken as "Bieber hair," is assumed to cut themselves, want to kill themselves, and/or is depressed (which they probably are but thats nothing to make fun of). They're horribly mistreated and judged just because of what they wear, the kind of music they listen to, and the way the portray themselves to be.
" Hey John, did you see the new kid at school today? He's kinda weird, huh?"

Get the Emomug. Well, there are two types of emo. There are the people who really appreciate the style, then there are the people who try to act emo to be cool or something. These people who pretend to be emo are called posers, and have now ruined the name of being emo, and a lot of other things. No, emo people are not depressed. Depressed people have nothing to do with being emo.

Me: I didn't know you like Avril Lavigne! She's my favorite singer.
Poser: I kno! She's lyke totalli punk! I luv gyrlfrend!
Random stranger: Are you depressed or something?
REAL emo person: No... Why do I look like it?
