Finger licking

This is a gross habit that people initiate when they are eating. The louder they suck their fingers when they eat, the more horrible and worse it is. There are things to prevent this: see napkin, manners.

If people think childishly sucking on their thumbs or biting their fingernails are nasty and bad habits, then why don't they think the same bout finger licking? What do they all have in common? They all involve fingers in the mouth!!!

The idiom itself is an example of such an experience, since licking trees is unpleasant, and even maple trees rarely taste sweet just by licking the bark. The idiom also implies that tried and true methods, rather than blind experimentation, yield better results. Drilling into the trunk of a maple tree with a tap, is the correct way to obtain maple syrup.

"Kicking the car to try and make it start again won't work. That's just licking a tree and hoping for maple syrup, honestly. Let's call a tow truck instead."

Flint-Licking

a person who is unwilling or very hesitant to share their personal weed. A flint-licker will load their own weed into bowls, but only in small amounts, they will then proceed to take a huge hit that pretty much burns it all, leaving little for others.

That guy was totally flint-licking, he would only smoke our stuff, and wouldn't share his.
