Ignoratio elenchi

Drawing a conclusion intended to refute some particular point, a conclusion that may even be valid (depending on the strength of the premises used to support the conclusion) but, by ignoring the actual issue at hand, fails in its attempt to refute.
"The argument, 'Some people say this candidate SHOULD NOT be elected because of their *crimes*, and their *ignorance*, and their *corrupt acts*, but the people who say that are wrong, in fact this candidate SHOULD be elected, because they're *so darn likeable*,' is an ignoratio elenchi. It attempts to refute an argument by drawing an opposite conclusion while completely failing to address the issues raised."
