design creep 

Unncessary placement of graphics on otherwise normal items in order to make a product stand out from its competitors. Tends to 'creep' in with each successive line of products in order to maintain market share. Ultimately driven by broader design creep trends within a given market segment.

"Hey, that would be a sweet cowboy shirt if it weren't for the design creep on the pockets"
